Happy Canada Day!

And welcome to The Cranky Canadian - Issue #001

I decided to launch The Cranky Canadian on Canada Day because, frankly, it just felt right.

Not because I’m in the mood for fireworks and flag-waving (though I’ll take the extra long weekend), but because I believe we’re standing at one of the most critical moments in our country’s recent history, and we need to start talking and doing something about it.

Canada is changing. Fast. Economically, politically, and culturally. And while some people pretend everything is fine, many of us feel the pressures of rising costs, shrinking opportunities, and the constant tug of American influence creeping into every part of our lives.

But here’s the good news—we don’t have to follow the same broken path.

What This Newsletter Is About

The Cranky Canadian is here for people who love this country, who are frustrated by the direction we’re heading, and who want to build something better together.

In the coming weeks and months, you’ll see topics like:

  • How to buy Canadian (for real, not just when it’s convenient)

  • Small business spotlights and how to support them

  • Deep dives into what’s going wrong—and what we can fix

  • Canadian alternatives to American tech, products, and platforms

And yes, the tone will be blunt. Sometimes sarcastic. Always honest.

This Moment Matters

Let’s be clear, we could potentially be heading into harder times. And pretending otherwise isn’t helping anyone.

However, that pressure and uncertainty are also an opportunity to reshape how we live, spend, and support one another. I believe Canadians are more patriotic right now than we’ve been in decades. Not in a cheap, performative way, but in a quiet, determined way.

We want to protect what matters. We want to build real resilience. And we’re finally starting to realize that looking out for each other—not just ourselves—isn’t weakness, it’s wisdom.

Let’s Get To Work

This first issue is just the starting point. I’ll be in your inbox every week with hard questions, hopeful ideas, and a clear goal: to help more Canadians live, work, and thrive without relying on systems that don’t have our best interests at heart.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, stick around.

Happy Canada Day.
